Angela Nellany didn’t admit that she tried to kill her estranged husband with a can of wasps. Friday, she pleaded no contest to assault with a deadly weapon.

The Riverbank woman was articulate and polite, saying “yes, ma’am” and “I do understand” as she waived her right to a trial in Stanislaus County Superior Court. Judge Nancy Ashley handed down a two-year sentence that likely will keep the middle-age mother of two behind bars for six more months.

The resolution is a far cry from the attempted murder and solicitation to murder charge the district attorney’s office filed after Nellany was arrested one year ago, when she was accused of leaving a soda can full of wasps in her husband’s truck and then hiring a hit man to finish the job.

Deputy District Attorney Shawn Barlow said a plea deal is a good compromise, because 12 jurors could have found Nellany guilty of attempted murder, sending her to prison for seven years to life, or they could have concluded that the case was little more than a family dispute gone awry.

“I think there were equal risks on both sides,” he said.

Defense attorney Martin Baker declined to comment.

“There were just bodies everywhere; it was horrible,” said Crystal Gaines, 27, whose father was among the dead.

Problem with packs of wild and crazed dogs gives people living in Moscow some strange odds. It seems you are more likely to get attacked and bitten by a vicious crazed pup than you are getting mugged on the street. So if going to Moscow do like the locals and carry sausage in your bag in case attacked.

vicious dog attacks peopleIn any big city, crime is a concern, but the citizens of Moscow have a unique danger to dodge on a daily basis.

According to official statistics, last year there were about 20,000 cases of humans attacked by stray dogs; 8,000 of them serious enough to involve the police or requiring hospitalization.

This means that in Moscow you are much more likely to get bitten by a dog than be mugged.

Commuters have to grapple with packs of unwanted strays on a daily basis.

HAVANA, Cuba (CNN) — Fidel Castro announced his resignation as president of Cuba and commander in chief of Cuba’s military Tuesday, according to a letter published in the state-run newspaper, Granma.

Fidel Castro, shown in an undated file photo, took power in Cuba in 1959 and reigned with an iron hand.

The resignation ends nearly a half-century of iron-fisted rule that inspired revolutionaries but frustrated 10 U.S. presidents.

Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte said the U.S. embargo on Cuba will not be lifted in the near term.

Castro revealed his plans without notice by publishing a letter in the middle of the night in state-run newspaper Granma.

Maybe the government should have spent a bit of that “million of dollars” on buying a better excuse from the comedy writers they employ.

From the Danger room

The Pentagon says it has to shoot down a malfunctioning spy satellite because of the threat of a toxic gas cloud. Space security experts are calling the rationale highly unlikely. “Having the US government spend millions of dollars to destroy a billion-dollar failure to save zero lives is comedic gold,” one tells DANGER ROOM.

A network of “suicide gurus” who use the internet to advise people how to kill themselves has been exposed.

Death cult: Nagasiva Yronwode, of the Church of Euthanasia
death-cult.jpgThey are blamed for prompting depressed and vulnerable youngsters to take their own lives.

One, an American satanist who boasts of writing a guide to the subject, says: “What’s the problem with ending your life via suicide?”

Another is a “pro-choice” Dutch writer whose website includes detailed accounts of dozens of suicide methods.

Campaigners have uncovered 29 “internet suicides” in Britain since 2001, including two new cases reported this weekend.

The findings follow the cluster of suicides among young people in Bridgend, where a coroner is now re-examining nine deaths on top of 16 suspected suicides under investigation. It emerged on Friday that another two young people from the Welsh town had been found hanged. Nathaniel Pritchard, 15, and his cousin Kelly Stephenson, 20, were both members of a social networking website.
