NEW YORK (CBS) ? There are about 45,000 cab drivers on the streets of New York City, but it’s those rude few that make a very lasting impression.

One driver was recently fined $1,000 and suspended for cursing.

CBS 2 HD has learned the details on what’s being done to make sure your next ride is a pleasant one.

Getting a cab ride in Gotham can be interesting to say the least. Just ask its residents.

“I think they drive like maniacs,” said Irene Bremis of Greenwich Village.

“More than once I feel like I have almost died because the driver is like, ‘Blah, blah, blah …’” Jackson Heights resident Carolyn Kaylor said.

“They come off with a real harsh attitude and you’re like let me just get to my location and leave,” Canarsie’s Jean Pyronneau said.

Operation “Sudden Fall“, began a year ago after an overdose by a female student at the university, authorities said.

One alleged dealer was just a month away from earning a master’s degree in homeland security and had worked with the campus police as a security officer, officials said. Another student who was arrested on suspicion of possession of cocaine and two guns was a criminal justice major, officials said.

Kenneth Ciaccio, 19, a member of the Theta Chi fraternity, allegedly sent out a mass text-message to “faithful customers,” saying that he was traveling to Las Vegas and would not be able to make his normal cocaine sales, the DEA said.

Have now heard about  the huge drug bust at San Diego State University? If not, story is below.

OK this is pretty cool, we know these guys are really evasive

giant-squid.jpg

It sounds like something out of a bad monster movie: a team of scientists busily examines the thawing carcass of a 900-pound colossal squid. They’ve kept it frozen for more than a year inside a walk-in freezer ever since a commercial fishing crew hauled it up from the chilly depths of the Antarctic last January, half dead and clinging to a giant toothfish, and it now sits floating in a massive temperature-controlled tank filled with an icy saline solution just above freezing. The scientists, some in white coats and waders, others in scuba gear, have only four hours to study the 30-foot-long specimen before its rubbery, pink tissue begins to decompose and they have to inject it and fill the tank with formaldehyde. Until then, they rush to perform a battery of tests, studying the suckers and hooks on in its tentacles, measuring its sharp, birdlike beak, examining the contents of its stomach, collecting tissue samples for DNA analysis, trying to determine its sex, its age. All the while, the creature’s eyes, which are the size of dinner plates and thought to be the largest in the animal kingdom, stare lifelessly ahead. Surrounding the chaos, is a cable-TV camera crew, recording the details of this rare autopsy for a documentary.

This will be the scene Wednesday at a facility outside Wellington, New Zealand, where for the last year, marine scientists and staff of the Museum of New Zealand have been trying to figure out just how to defrost and examine the largest known specimen of colossal squid without damaging it. If everything goes accordingly, the squid will end up on display at the museum later this year, encased in a big Plexiglas tank and—ideally—fully intact. “It sounds simple, just defrost a big lump of dead squid, right? But so much can go wrong,” says Steve O’Shea, director of the Earth and Oceanic Sciences Research Institute at the Auckland University of Technology, and one of the world’s foremost squid experts. He and his colleagues have spent the better part of the last year pondering the challenge of defrosting the half-ton specimen, which remains tangled in sea netting and stuffed into a large plastic bin, smushed like an accordion. The problem with defrosting something so large is that at room temperature, by the time its insides have thawed, the outer flesh will have already begun to rot. At one point, they considered using an industrial-size microwave, but figured it was too risky. “I know it can be done,” says O’Shea. “But it wouldn’t have looked good if we boiled the thing.”

Two Illinois Men Indicted on Federal Hate Crime

WASHINGTON - Acting Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division Grace Chung Becker and U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Illinois A. Courtney Cox announced today that Joseph L. Brown of Collinsville, Ill., and William Charles Bowen of O’Fallon, Ill., were indicted by a federal grand jury for conspiring to drive an African-American couple out of their home, and for vandalizing that home with racist graffiti. Brown is also charged with making false statements to a federal investigator.

According to the indictment, on the evening of March 29, 2003, while at a party, Brown and Bowen came up with a plan to try to drive the victims out of their home because Brown and Bowen did not want African-Americans living in Brown’s neighborhood. Brown offered Bowen marijuana in exchange for Bowen painting the racist graffiti on the home of the victims, and Bowen agreed to do so. It is alleged that Bowen then vandalized the home.

Can we celebrate with a pizza party now?

456-21web-mexico-obesity-1.jpgMEXICO CITY — Fueled by the rising popularity of soft drinks and fast-food restaurants, Mexico has become the second fattest nation in the world. Mexican health officials say it could surpass the U.S. as the most obese country within 10 years if trends continue.

More than 71 percent of Mexican women and 66 percent of Mexican men are overweight, according to the latest national surveys.

With diabetes now Mexico’s leading cause of death, activists and leaders hope to renew efforts to crack down on junk food and other fatty-food consumption and encourage citizens to exercise more. But it will be a tough battle, as industry groups are expected to put up a fight.

No one knows better the country’s affection for fattening foods than Lidia Garcia Garduno, who’s run a fruit stand in central Mexico City for the past 10 years.

On a posting today on the Playgirl blog, the mag invited Spitzer to show them “what you saved for such a select few,” dangling the $1 million figure offered by Hustler to callgirl Ashley Alexandra Dupré, whom Spitzer first met as “Kristen” and who has since been revealed happily offering up the goods for free on various “Girls Gone Wild” videotapes.

Here’s the post that went online earlier today on “playgirlmag.wordpress.com,” which ETP has confirmed actually IS the blog of Playgirl Magazine:

Dear Eliot,It’s not fair. We’ve been watching you; and we’ve seen how you’ve been crucified by the mass media, conservatives, and Republicans. We’ve stood by as your call-girl was offered $1 million by Hustler to show the world what she’s already been showing the world for a whole lot less.

We think you’ve had a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad week. But we’ve been thinking.

Your political career is sadly over; and you owe a lot of money to a lot of people. Hell, you may land in jail before too long. So consider this letter a brief note of urgency.

james hole kills real estate agentWITI-TV, JEFFERSON CO. — Jefferson County sheriff’s officials say they’ve arrested a man they believe is responsible for the murder of a real estate agent who was found dead in the house she was showing him.

Sheriff’s Detective Sergeant Lawrence Lee says the man was arrested after he was brought in for questioning Wednesday night. He has not been formally charged.

Lee says 71-year-old Ann Nelson met the man at the rural house in the town of Oakland. When officers were called to check on the property, Nelson was found dead in a smoke-filled bedroom next to a smoldering mattress.

Investigators say they determined Nelson died of smoke inhalation, but she also had severe blunt force trauma to the head. Lee says some type of weapon was recovered, but he declined to be more specific.

The man is being held in the Jefferson County Jail and is expected in court Thursday afternoon.

The man who went on the well known ethics crusades against businesses seems to have ethics issues of his own.

Gov. Eliot Spitzer announced Wednesday that he is resigning, completing a spectacular fall from power for a politician whose once-promising career imploded amid allegations that he paid thousands of dollars for high-end prostitutes.

“I look at my time as governor with a sense of what might have been,” Spitzer said, with his expressionless wife Silda standing at his side. “There is much more to be done, and I cannot allow my private failings to disrupt the people’s work.”
