Chinese President Hu Jintao has ordered an all-out effort to help the victims of a massive earthquake and traveled to the area himself.  The President has requested international aid to help with disaster relief efforts and international aid is coming in to help the Chinese people through this natural crisis.

At the moment, Government officials say around 10,000 people were killed by the 7.9-magnitude quake, but that figure is expected to change as more information on victims and survivors who are currently trapped becomes available. The massive quake struck Monday afternoon US time. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao traveled to the region to direct the rescue work and looked visibly shaken by the massive destruction and casualties of the quake. The destruction is so extensive that rescuers are running into difficulty trying to even get into some of the affected areas to begin rescue.

Roads, rails, power lines, sewer systems and all public works are damaged or destroyed.  According to local reports, at least six schools collapsed to some extent, trapping almost 900 students, teenagers,  in the rubble.

The source of this earthquake was reported to be in the Sichuan province. But tremors were felt all the way to Beijing, almost 1000 miles away. Reports say it was felt as far as Thailand and Vietnam.

JOHN VAUSE, CNN: This was the moment when China shook. “Our building is still moving. This is real, absolutely real,” says this man in the city of Chengdu, about 60 miles from the epicenter. Outside, streets were crowded with the dazed and frightened. “I was so scared,” says this woman. “The room I was staying in was shaking like this.” Read the rest of this entry »

myanmar cyclone floodingThis is such a horrible natural disaster, cyclone kills thousands and many, many still missing, 20 thousand plus are confirmed dead with over 40 thousand people missing and millions left homeless.

For anyone who does not know what a cyclone is… its a hurricane that spins in the opposite direction. The difference between a cyclone and a hurricane is the direction in which the winds spin.

From the International Herald Tribune - The death toll from a powerful cyclone that struck Myanmar over the weekend rose to 22,500 on Tuesday, and foreign governments and aid organizations began mobilizing for a major relief operation.

The number was the latest in a steadily escalating official toll since Cyclone Nargis struck early Saturday, devastating much of the fertile Irrawaddy Delta and the nation’s major city, Yangon. At a news conference in Yangon, the minister for relief and resettlement, Maung Maung Swe, said 41,000 people were still missing from the cyclone, which triggered a surge of water inland from the sea.

“More deaths were caused by the tidal wave than the storm itself,” the minister said, in the first official description of the destruction.

“The wave was up to 12 feet high,” or 3.6 meters, “and it swept away and inundated half the houses in low-lying villages. They did not have anywhere to flee.”

A spokesman for the United Nations World Food Program said that as many as one million people might have lost their homes and that some villages had been almost totally destroyed. Read the rest of this entry »

If you look at some of the deformed babies on this site, there are a few and some parasitic twins, but nothing quite as extreme as this. The Vampire bomber, named Lestat, seems to have died.

Lestat, the bomber was in jail for bombing a cash machine, however, I am not sure what the problem was since Lestat was apparently was issued a license to have bombs in Bolivia and even created some promo materials for his bombing work. I guess Bolivia is not big on background checks for licensing, had they checked, they may have found that the guy was a nut and believed himself to be immortal.

Prison officials even had to admit the vampire bomber may have had mental issues after he was caught with a can of gasoline in his cell to use in burning down the jail.

Vampire’ Bomber From Calif. Dies In Bolivian Jail.

LA PAZ (AP) ? A convicted hotel bomber from California who modeled himself on a fictional vampire has died after becoming ill in prison, officials said Tuesday.

Twenty-six-year-old Tristan Jay Amero was serving a 30-year sentence for bombing two low-rent hotels in the Bolivian capital of La Paz in 2006. Two Bolivians died in one of the attacks.

KIGALI (Reuters) - Rwanda on Monday released 8,000 prisoners accused of involvement in the country’s 1994 genocide, prompting anger from survivors of the slaughter who fear new ethnic killings.

Rwanda’s prisons have been overflowing with thousands of inmates, some convicted and others awaiting trial for their role in the murders of an estimated 800,000 Tutsi

“The group that has been released excludes key masterminds of the genocide,” Rwanda’s chief prosecutor, Martin Ngoga, told Reuters of those freed on Monday.

The Rwandan government has said the releases are to ease overcrowding in the prisons and to foster reconciliation.

But as with the earlier releases, genocide survivors expressed outrage. They accuse released inmates of planning or carrying out more ethnic killings, underscoring how deep the wounds still are nearly 13 years later.

ALEXANDRIA, Virginia  —  A U.S. Foreign Service officer stationed in Brazil and Congo used his status to pressure female visa applicants for sex, according to federal charges.

Gons G. Nachman, 42, is charged in U.S. District Court with misuse of his diplomatic passport, making false statements and possessing child pornography. The charges were unsealed Friday.

Nachman was ordered jailed pending a detention hearing scheduled for Tuesday. Court records reflect that a defense lawyer has not yet been appointed.

According to the affidavit, Nachman made a habit of pressuring and pursuing sexual relationships with attractive female visa applicants while stationed in Rio de Janeiro.

Two applicants interviewed by federal agents said Nachman “persistently pursued these female applicants despite his position as U.S. Vice Consul who was personally handling these still pending immigration visa cases.”

One of the women told agents that Nachman “took advantage of her and he instructed her that, if questioned, she should deny knowing him personally.”

Nachman admitted to having sexual relationships with two women, according to the affidavit.

The affidavit also says that Nachman helped a woman from the Congo file a false refugee application with the Brazilian government so she could work for Nachman while he was stationed in Rio de Janeiro.

When all hell breaks loose over a cartoon what do you do? reprint it of course.

Danish newspapers reprinted cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad in a gesture of solidarity Wednesday after police revealed a plot to kill the creator of the caricature that sparked deadly riots in the Muslim world.

Danish Muslims said they would seek to avoid a repeat of the violence two years ago — but with a rightwing Dutch lawmaker planning to air a movie that condemns Islam as fascist, Europe pondered the possibility of a new cycle of turmoil.

“I just don’t want go through this again,” said Mohammed Shafiq of the Ramadhan Foundation, a Muslim educational group in London. Shafiq said he has written a protest letter to the Danish ambassador in London.

Other Muslim groups echoed his sentiments, saying they believed the Danish papers were seeking unnecessarily to rekindle the fiery debate over free speech and Islam that engulfed Europe during the uproar over the cartoons in 2006.

Some experts said that discussion never went away — it just drifted off the editorial pages of Europe’s dailies.

maori-terrorist.jpgTo many New Zealanders, veteran activist Tame Iti is the fearsome face of Maori extremism.

The police believe he’s the leader of a cell within the Tuhoe tribe planning to terrorise Kiwis as part of clan demands for an independent nation within NZ.

In October, more than 300 police, dressed in black balaclavas and with automatic weapons cocked, raided almost 50 properties mainly across the North Island in a pre-dawn search for rocket launchers, IRA and al-Qaeda manuals, weapons, bombs and ammo.

But as he lay spread-eagled on the floor of his girlfriend’s carport, with six guns pointed at him and two Alsatians barking at his face, Tame Iti couldn’t have been happier.

Sure, the Tuhoe want independence, and their land claims agreed to. Sure, he and his friends ran bush camps in the mountains up the valley from his place. Sure, getting public and political backing for their land claims is a hard, long fight. But terrorist training camps? IRA and al-Qaeda manuals? Rocket launchers hidden in sleepy dairy country?

The publicity arising from the dawn raid has made Tame Iti a household name. The police case has since collapsed. The land claims continue.

In tomorrow’s edition of GOOD WEEKEND MAGAZINE, Tame Iti explains what lies behind the war painted-faces the Tuhoe present to the world.

Just sick news - Mum ‘entirely remorseless’ for raping daughter

A judge has described a woman who was today sentenced to jail for raping her daughter as “entirely remorseless”.

The 41-year-old woman, who cannot be named, sobbed today as she was sent to jail for three-and-a-half years by the Brisbane District Court.

She was found guilty yesterday by a jury of one count of rape.

During the trial the court was told she digitally raped her eight-year-old daughter at her home at Donnybrook, north of Brisbane, between November 2005 and February 2006.

The prosecution suggested she may have used a vibrator on the young child, however, Judge Milton Griffin did not accept there was sufficient evidence to prove this.

The girl did not sustain any physical injuries from the assault, but the court was told she has ongoing trust issues.

Judge Griffin today told the woman that her actions were “disgusting” and “traumatic” for her daughter.

“All children in our society must be protected (and) those who are primarily called upon to protect them are their parents,” he said.

“You were in a position of trust. You disgracefully and grossly betrayed that trust”.

Judge Griffin found the woman was “entirely remorseless” for her actions.
